Student Consultancies

Student consultancies at Kent include the Kent IT Clinic, the Kent Law Clinic and the Digital Media Hub

What is the Kent IT Clinic?

The Kent IT Clinic (KITC) has been set up within the Computing Laboratory to provide students with first-hand experience of consultancy whilst studying. The Clinic provides a ‘light touch’ consulting service to local small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and individuals. Since its launch in October 2004, it has made many successful client consultations. It has proved very popular with our students at Medway and Canterbury who can earn cash or credits towards their final degree. The clinic has project rooms in the University at Medway and Canterbury.

The Kent IT Clinic 2007-2008 annual report  provides a snapshot of the Clinic’s achievements during its last year and outlines the clinic’s purpose and the services on offer. You can learn about the projects which have been worked on over the past year and find out what KITC plans for the next twelve months. You can also look at how the clinic is managed and meet some of the consultants involved.

How will it benefit me?
Here are just some of the benefits that you can expect:

  • gain valuable practical experience doing real work for local companies
  • enhance your CV and improve your future job prospects
  • earn money for the work you do – or do it as an optional module and earn credit towards your final degree
  • learn how marketing a small business works and help to promote its activities at national exhibitions
  • explore different types of work to help you decide what sort of work you want to do in the future

What is the Kent Law Clinic?

Engaging with the law as it affects the lives of ordinary people is a superb way of getting to think about how it works, and how it doesn’t

The Law Clinic is a partnership between students, academics and solicitors and barristers in practice locally. It has two objects: to provide a public service for local people who need legal advice and representation but cannot afford to pay for it, and to enhance the education of students in the Kent Law School.

How can students get involved?

Law students at both the Canterbury and Medway sites of the Kent Law School have the opportunity of working in the Kent Law Clinic.

In the Law Clinic students have the full conduct of cases on behalf of clients – under the close supervision of qualified lawyers. They can deepen and broaden their knowledge of law through the experience of working on live cases and through a structured reflection on that legal practice.

What is the Digital Media Hub?

The new Digital Media Hub is designed to bring together the creativity of the school’s Multimedia Technology and Design undergraduates and graduates with businesses in the region. It’s an opportunity to address the needs of companies and pursue further links with partners, for example, Kent County Council who wish to gain access to our advanced digital technology and creative expertise.

Digital Media Hub staffDigital Media Hub Leaflet The Hub will also give access to other digital technological experts throughout the School and ultimately, it aims to secure employment for students within industry. It’s based at the new Innovation Centre on the Canterbury campus at the University of Kent.

The Digital Media Hub is your pathway to world leading research, academic and industry expertise at the School of Engineering and Digital Arts. Our aim is to provide a highly professional and specialised service to suit your requirements and budget. We provide consultancy services, interaction and usability testing and hire out facilities. We also work with industrial partners on collaborative student projects.
