Shell LiveWIRE Awards are one way in which young entrepreneurs can get cash, publicity and a well needed boost to get their businesses off the ground.

We’ve given our Awards page a little revamp, making it much more visual and providing a space where we can pull together all awards-related content on our site.

What’s New?

The new-look landing page www.shell-livewire.org/awards now offers the visitor two choices; go one way to find out more about our monthly £1,000 Shell LiveWIRE Grand Ideas Awards and the other for details of our annual £10,000 Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2011.

Elevator Pitch Videos

Another big change is that in the latter half of each month, visitors can now watch the elevator pitch videos of those who have been shortlisted for our £1,000 Shell LiveWIRE Grand Ideas Awards, without being logged in.

You still need to login/be a registered member to vote, but we hope that by making the videos more open they will help inspire other would-be entrepreneurs and serve as a useful teaching aid for teachers, lecturers and business advisors.

The Kent Global Challenge Team

We now have the names of the five member University of Kent team for the VT Knowledge Global Business Concept Challenge, which takes place in Virginia Tech University in August this year. The team consists of thres bioscience PhD students, William Humphries, Caroline Tolley and Claudia Rathje, who have invented a new diagnostic tool for testing for specific diseases, and they will be joined by Phoebe Maund, studying Cnservation and Emma Perot, studying law.

All 5 will fly out on the 21st August to compete against teams from around the world.

Big Ideas now closed for 2011!

The deadline has now passed, and many thanks for all the great ideas! 52 entries received , involving 77 students and 16 teams of the ideas were from teams . All the entries are being judged this week, and the top 8 from Canterbury campus and the top 8 from Medway campus will go through the presentation round on 31^st March (Canterbury) and 1^st April (Medway).

Everyone who entered will hear feedback from the judges, and all will be invited to the awards ceremony on the Thursday 7^th April, where every participant will receive a certificate of participation, 10 employability points as well as some additional prizes!

As well as the winning cheques, the best team entry will also be announced at the awards event, as the team from Kent going forward to enter the Global Challenge this August in Virginia, USA, with a week long expenses paid trip, and the chance to win $25000. Last year the Kent team came second – winning $2500.

Judges for the presentations in Canterbury will be Bob Jones CEO of BSK-CiC, Sally Aspital business owner and mentor, Paul Andrews, CEO Jobsinkent.com

For Medway the judges are Professor Katie Truss, Head of Kent Business School Medway, Valerie Marshall, Chair of the Council, University of Kent, and Carole Barron, Director of Innovation and Enterprise.

The Anatomy of an Entrepreneurial Career

17th March at the Bulb, Canterbury Innovation Centre, 5.30 – 7.00pm.
Peter Cook, MD of Human Dynamics and The Academy of Rock. Peter’s career has traversed working as a scientist, international pharmaceutical troubleshooter, business academic, rock musician and author of three books on leadership, innovation and creativity. His titles ‘Best Practice Creativity’ and ‘Sex, Leadership and Rock’n’Roll’ have been acclaimed by Professor Charles Handy and Tom Peters, world leaders in their field.

He will discuss lessons learned in the context of those of you thinking of starting out as entrepreneurs.

Kent Team in Top Three at Princes Trust Awards

The University of Kent Team for the Princes Trust Million £ Makers, attended the regional finals at the Century Club in Shaftesbury Avenue on the evening of Monday 28^th February. The University of Kent were in the top three University teams in the region competing against 17 other Universities. The awards were handed out by the recent Apprentice show participant – Laura Moore.

The team (Dan Medlen, Deep Nagda, James Kent and Robert Finnerty- all first year Accountancy students at Kent Business School) chatted with Laura, who had briefly studied at the University of Kent. As well as the University awards, there were many corporate teams at the event, and a great night for networking opportunities.

Over £750,000 has been raised this year from Million £Makers for the Princes Trust.

The University of Kent team were awarded their certificates – and are keen to pull a larger team together to compete next year!
