Student Consultancies

What is the Kent IT Clinic?

The Kent IT Clinic (KITC) has been set up within the Computing Laboratory to provide students with first-hand experience of consultancy whilst studying. The Clinic provides a ‘light touch’ consulting service to local small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and individuals. Since its launch in October 2004, it has made many successful client consultations. It has proved very popular with our students at Medway and Canterbury who can earn cash or credits towards their final degree. The clinic has project rooms in the University at Medway and Canterbury.

The Kent IT Clinic 2007-2008 annual report (PDF format) provides a snapshot of the Clinic’s achievements during its last year and outlines the clinic’s purpose and the services on offer. You can learn about the projects which have been worked on over the past year and find out what KITC plans for the next twelve months. You can also look at how the clinic is managed and meet some of the consultants involved.

How will it benefit me?

Here are just some of the benefits that you can expect:

  • gain valuable practical experience doing real work for local companies
  • enhance your CV and improve your future job prospects
  • earn money for the work you do – or do it as an optional module and earn credit towards your final degree
  • learn how marketing a small business works and help to promote its activities at national exhibitions
  • explore different types of work to help you decide what sort of work you want to do in the future

What is the Kent Law Clinic?

Engaging with the law as it affects the lives of ordinary people is a superb way of getting to think about how it works, and how it doesn’t

The Law Clinic is a partnership between students, academics and solicitors and barristers in practice locally. It has two objects: to provide a public service for local people who need legal advice and representation but cannot afford to pay for it, and to enhance the education of students in the Kent Law School.

How can students get involved?

Law students at both the Canterbury and Medway sites of the Kent Law School have the opportunity of working in the Kent Law Clinic.

In the Law Clinic students have the full conduct of cases on behalf of clients – under the close supervision of qualified lawyers. They can deepen and broaden their knowledge of law through the experience of working on live cases and through a structured reflection on that legal practice.
